John Sewell is a candidate for Ward 21 councillor

John Sewell is running in the November 13 city election to represent Ward 21, the ward where he lives. The boundaries of Ward 21 are, roughly, Spadina Avenue to the east, Briar Hill Road to the north, Winona Drive to the west, and the CPR tracks to the south.

Donations are greatly appreciated. Provincial legislation states that a candidate for council can spend a total of $5000 plus 70 cents per voter – which means there is an expenditure limit of about $30,000, not including fund-raising and victory party expenses. Our hope is to raise about $30,000.

The city has a very generous rebate program: 75% of any donation up to $300.00 will be rebated; and half of any sum over $300.00 to a maximum of $750.00.
That means a donation of $50 gets a $37.50 rebate; a donation of $100.00, a $75.00 rebate; a donation of $250.00, a $187.50 rebate; a donation of $500, a $325.00 rebate. Rebates are paid by the city about six months after the election.

Our campaign has decided to accept donations only from individuals – not from corporations, unions or associations. Donations from those seeking discretionary approvals from City Hall are gratefully declined.

Donations larger than $750.00 cannot be accepted by a candidate for council. Anonymous donations are not permitted by the Municipal Elections Act. The Act requires that the names of all donors be made public. To stress transparency, we will be posting a list of donor’s names before the election – probably the first list will be posted in late September when our website is up and running.
